Literacy and Maths strategy development in 2021

The Ministry of Education is developing strategies for literacy and mathematics and statistics, including numeracy and we need your help to make sure it’s the best it can be. A parallel strategy is being developed to strengthen the teaching and learning of Te Reo Matatini me Pāngarau.

To nurture the wellbeing of all children and young people and allow them to live successfully, being literate and numerate remain crucial in combination with a range of capabilities. National and international studies, assessments and monitoring have demonstrated a decline in New Zealand primary and secondary learners’ achievements in mathematics and literacy when compared to students in other, similar education systems.
