Process for creating Te Takanga o Te Wā and Aotearoa New Zealand’s histories content

We engaged with educators, experts and the public to create the new Aotearoa New Zealand’s histories and Te Takanga o Te Wā draft curriculum content. Find out more about the different groups involved in the process at education.govt.nz/AotearoaNZhistories.

Aotearoa New Zealand’s histories and Te Takanga o Te Wā testing explained:

  • School and Kura Testing

The purpose of School and Kura Testing was to get specific feedback from teachers on how the draft content material would work in their schools.

  • Classroom and Akomanga Trialling

The purpose of Classroom and Akomanga Trialling was to understand how teachers and kaiako used the draft content in their planning and how students responded.

  • Public engagement

The purpose of the online survey and broader public engagement was to provide everyone in Aotearoa New Zealand with the opportunity to share their view on the draft content.

2019

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern and Education Minister Chris Hipkins announce Aotearoa New Zealand’s histories will be taught in schools and kura in 2022

2020

Draft curriculum content for Aotearoa New Zealand’s histories in The New Zealand Curriculum and Te Takanga o Te Wā in Te Marautanga o Aotearoa written by two Curriculum Writing Groups convened by the Ministry of Education

2021

Feedback on draft curriculum content given by:

  • Ohu Matua
  • He Whakaruruhau
  • Interagency Group
  • Schools and kura who tested the content
  • Royal Society Independent Expert Advisory Group

Three types of testing were undertaken and then analysed at the same time:

  1. School and Kura Testing – survey on draft content completed 354 survey responses from 157 kura, schools or groups of kura/ schools. Ten wānanga gave feedback on Te Takanga o Te Wā

  1. Classroom and akomanga trialling of draft content completed Carried out by teachers, kaiako and leaders in around 60 schools and 20 kura Trialling was facilitated by CORE Education

Report on recommended changes for Te Takanga o Te Wā in Te Marautanga o Aotearoa developed with external peer review. Those involved were:
