Process for creating Te Takanga o Te Wā and Aotearoa New Zealand’s histories content

Aotearoa New Zealand is on a journey to ensure that all ākonga in all schools and kura learn how our histories have shaped our present-day lives.

The final Aotearoa New Zealand’s histories and Te Takanga o Te Wā curriculum content is now available and will be taught in all schools and kura from 2023.

Creating Te Takanga o Te Wā and Aotearoa New Zealand’s histories curriculum content was a collaborative effort. We worked with the education sector, experts, historians, iwi, and community groups. Find out more on Who we worked with.

The process diagram available to download below outlines the entire process of creating Te Takanga o Te Wā and Aotearoa New Zealand’s histories.

Public consultation on Te Takanga o Te Wā and Aotearoa New Zealand’s histories

An essential element in the process was ensuring all New Zealanders had the opportunity to have their voices heard on this important topic. We went out to the whole of New Zealand in Feb-May 2021 to gather feedback and carried out testing of the draft content in schools and kura with teachers and kaiako, to further improve the draft curriculum content. Thank you to the thousands of people who shared your thoughts on the curriculum content for Te Takanga o Te Wā and Aotearoa New Zealand’s histories.

On 8 September 2021, Te Tāhuhu o te Mātauranga - Ministry of Education released the three consultation documents for Te Takanga o Te Wā and Aotearoa New Zealand’s histories. There is one public consultation report, one classroom and akomanga trialling, one school and kura testing, and a report from the Ministry on what we heard and our response.
