Extra support for beginning teachers impacted by COVID-19

The Teaching Council has developed an enhanced induction and mentoring programme for beginning teachers who have been impacted by COVID-19.

The programme provides additional support for beginning teachers who have had reduced practical experience during their initial teacher education as a result of the COVID-19 lockdowns.

The programme will be delivered nationwide by the University of Auckland and is fully funded by the Ministry of Education. More information about the programme and eligibility requirements can be found on the University of Auckland’s website(external link) and the Teaching Council’s website(external link).

To be eligible for the programme, beginning teachers must:

  • have completed their initial teacher education (ITE) qualification in 2020
  • have completed their ITE qualification using the Teaching Council’s temporary reduced practical experience requirements; and
  • be a registered teacher employed in a long-term teaching role in an early learning service, school or kura.

Eligible beginning teachers can enrol in the programme at: Enhanced Induction and Mentoring Programme  University of Auckland(external link).

If you’re a beginning teacher and not sure if you’re eligible or have any questions, please call the Teaching Council on +64 (0) 4 471 0852
