2020 dates for Accord Teacher Only Days for secondary schools and wharekura
A Secondary Working Group has been established to co-design and support the implementation of eight additional teacher-only days allocated in an Accord between the Ministry of Education, NZEI Te Riu Roa and PPTA Te Wehengarua.
All schools and kura will get eight additional teacher-only days between now and 2022 once the Accord is ratified. These eight days will not extend the school year.
These days are set aside to support the implementation of changes to NCEA, and wider strengthening of curriculum, progress and achievement practice.
For the secondary sector, the days will be additional to schools’ existing allocation of teacher-only days with two days scheduled for 2020, three for 2021, and three for 2022.
While the Working Group is continuing to co-design the details of how these days will be used (and will be able to provide more information on the focus of each day in the near future), for secondary schools, the days for 2020 will be on a rolling regional basis.
The dates for the 2020 teacher-only days for secondary schools will be:

Formally, the Minister of Education can authorise boards to be open for fewer half-days than usually required, under section 65D(1) of the Education Act 1989.
The Ministry will recommend the Minister authorises boards to be open for fewer half-days than required, for the purpose of teacher-only days which align with the Accord. Until then, these days should not be formally scheduled.
Schools should continue to plan their existing teacher-only days as before.
The Ministry of Education is working with NZEI and there will be information on the accord days for Primary schools available in the near future.
