Student Information Sharing Initiative (SISI)

The Student Information Sharing Initiative (SISI) is a key project within the Integrated Education Data (iEd) programme. It has the potential to provide a secure electronic platform so information automatically moves with children and young people as they move through the education system.

The platform has the potential to bring considerable benefits to children, young people and teachers by:

  • Improving the transfer of student information between schools so that schools have access to key information from day one.
  • Reducing the need for teachers to reassess new students.
  • Providing more timely information to support students with special education needs.
  • Storing information securely and making it more accessible to those who have the appropriate permissions.
  • Improving the flow of information within and between Communities of Learning | Kāhui Ako.

SISI is proposed to start with schools, with the potential to be expanded so information is shared between early learning services, schools and tertiary institutions.

We are working with legal, ethics and privacy experts to ensure data privacy and access is managed appropriately.

SISI was initially part of the Ministry’s Digital Era Learning, Teaching and Assessment (DELTA) Programme. In June 2016, we released a report (external link)  outlining SISI’s progress to improving the management and exchange of student data.

Co-designing SISI

We’re co-designing SISI with education sector representatives to ensure the best possible outcome for everyone.

We’ve talked with principals, administrators, teachers and others from a broad range of schools throughout New Zealand to find out how they manage student data, what their issues are, and how we can improve the current system.

We’ve also been talking to education sector groups, other education agencies, and student management system (SMS) vendors.

More than 2,000 people who work with education data responded to the SISI survey. We’ll publish the highlights of the survey results once they’re available.

All the information we’ve gathered is being used to design the processes for entering, storing, using and sharing student information. Helping us design and test the new processes are representatives from different types of schools and people working in different roles including management, administration and teaching positions.

We’ve also set up 2 schools’ working groups to provide us with advice and guidance on the development of SISI. Members of the English-medium Schools Working Group and the Māori-medium Schools Working Group include representatives from schools, kura kaupapa Māori and Communities of Learning | Kāhui Ako.

Advising the iEd programme, including SISI, is a sector advisory group which includes representatives from early childhood, school and principal organisations as well as education unions.
