Early Learning Regulatory Update – October 2019

Regulatory reminder for the Early Learning sector for October 2019 about ensuring you are using the correct ratios.

Ensuring you have the correct ratios

We recently saw Facebook posts indicating some confusion about the adult-to-child ratio requirements. Under the current regulations, ratio calculations apply at service level, rather than at a room by room basis.

However, we expect children’s health, safety and wellbeing to be a key consideration when services arrange rosters, deploy staff and make supervision decisions. Adults having lunch, on break or in non-contact times cannot be included in ratio counts.

Although the ratio requirements are specified in the regulations, we can impose additional supervision requirements.

The current ratio requirements can be found in Schedule 2 of the Education (Early Childhood Services) Regulations 2008.
