Symantec Antivirus licence

How to get Symantec SEP software, the protection it provides, the platforms it runs on, and who can use it.

Software included in the Agreement

Symantec provides the Ministry of Education's antivirus software for schools, Symantec End Point Protection (SEP).

Symantec antivirus software version 12 should be upgraded to version 14, as it goes End of Standard Support Life on 3 April 2019. If schools need support to upgrade they should contact the ICT Helpdesk.

Schools covered by the Agreement

The Agreement covers the cost of SEP antivirus licenses for all New Zealand state and state-integrated schools.

Independent schools can buy the software at the price negotiated by the Ministry.


Duration of the Symantec licence rights 

The Agreement with Symantec runs through to 31 December 2019. When the Ministry renews or alters the Agreement, we'll inform you via the School Leaders Bulletin (He Pitopito Kōrero), and this website.

Protection provided by Symantec

The product available for Windows is called SEP and includes the following protection:

  • antivirus
  • anti-spyware
  • malware
  • desktop firewall
  • intrusion prevention
  • device and application control.

Separate Symantec antivirus software is available for Novell Netware, Macintosh and Linux environments.

Symantec is compatible with:

  • Microsoft Windows desktops and servers
  • Novell desktops and servers
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux servers
  • SuSE LINUX servers
  • Macintosh operating systems.

How to get Symantec SEP antivirus software

Datacom manages each school’s enrolment for the Ministry under the New Zealand School Agreement.

Help with installation and updates from the ICT Helpdesk

The ICT Helpdesk gives free help with installation and support by phone and email.

On-site technical support costs $100+GST per hour, plus travel.

Symantec will release new updates and versions of SEP throughout the Agreement period. Call the ICT Helpdesk for information about downloading update. The helpdesk will provide you with a temporary username and password.

Home use of SEP antivirus software

If a staff member uses their home computer mostly for school business, they can install SEP on that computer.

And if a computer is owned or leased by the school and used for school work, staff and students can use SEP; it will have been installed on that machine.
