Issues being considered for an education bill

A number of issues are being considered for legislation in 2018.

Prior to making decisions on what will be included and drafting the legislation, the Minister of Education has asked us to consult with the education sector on 6 items. For some items, the consultation will indicate if a law change is necessary, for others it will indicate which option is preferred by those who provide feedback to us. There will be further opportunity to make submissions on any proposed legislation as part of the select committee process.

Consultation closes on 13 April 2018.

To ensure information of public interest is available, the Cabinet paper outlining the consultation approach for proposed content for an education bill has been proactively released.

The Education report seeking the Minister’s approval to repeal the Communities of Online Learning Regulatory framework has also been proactively released.

This report asked the Minister to consider the approach to online learning within broader strategic discussions about the education system, and redevelop the legislative framework for distance education, returning Te Aho o Te Kura Pounamu to its previous role in the system.
