Education Council to receive $21m transitional funding

The Education Council will receive $21.34m transitional funding over the next 3 years with the aim that it will be financially sustainable by 1 July 2019.

The Council has identified a shortfall in its revenue caused by factors such as:

  • an inherited deficit from the Teachers Council,
  • keeping teachers’ practising certificate fees at 2010 levels,
  • a larger workload due to increases in complaints assessment (due to mandatory reporting)
  • changes to teachers’ identification verification processes.

This transitional funding will allow it time to scope the true cost of delivering all its functions and to consult with teachers about its fee structures (in 2017). The funding is conditional on the Council becoming self- sufficient and financially sustainable by 1 July 2019.
