Future education provision for the Wakatipu Basin area

We are working on plans for future education provision in the Wakatipu Basin area. Gabrielle Wall is leading the community engagement.

Second round of engagement

We’ve scheduled a further round of community engagement for late November facilitated by Dr Wall.  This will involve public meetings as well as an online survey. This round will  look at testing conceptual ideas about the future direction of schooling in this area in more detail Dr Wall will also run student-focus groups and meet with other stakeholders to ensure we consider a range of viewpoints.

Updates and suggested information for consideration will be sent out by Dr Wall before the public meetings. Email wakatipu.futureplanning@education.govt.nz if you wish to be added to the distribution list.

Information gained from this process will help us in developing a growth strategy for the Minister’s approval in May 2017.

This engagement round will have both a short/medium term focus, and a broader, longer term focus.

These ideas will be discussed in more detail at public meetings, and your views can be submitted by completing the online survey.

As part of the engagement process we would encourage you to think about how the principles of education have evolved and what attributes and ideas that students will need from education in the 21st century. We want to ensure our system enables these ideas to be realised to their fullest potential, and are interested in your views about what barriers at a system level could get in the way.

Outcomes from the first round of engagement

Thank you to everyone who participated in community engagement about future planning for the Wakatipu Basin in June and July.  The process involved face-to-face engagement workshops followed by an online survey. Workshops identified potential features, ideas and structural options for education provision, and an online survey explored the levels of support for the identified options. There were 98 participants in face-to-face consultation and 646 respondents completed the online survey.  We were pleased to note that nearly half the online responses were from current students across the area.

We'll continue to work with individual schools to meet short and medium term needs.  Each school will have a master plan developed to ensure it can continue to accommodate students in the area.  We're also undertaking a site evaluation process, for further primary schooling in the medium term.

Community Preferences

  • The strongest themes that emerged from the face-to-face engagement workshops were the desire that future education provision in the area should reinforce community cohesion, and that there should be opportunities to access and interact with the natural environment.
  • For both Years 1 – 6 and Years 7 – 8, respondents rated access to the natural environment as the most important feature of education provision in the Wakatipu area. This was the feature rated third most important for Years 9 – 13.
  • Digital learning was highly rated for both Years 7 – 8 and Years 9 – 13, and access to tertiary options was the highest rated option for Years 9 – 13.
  • Green space was rated as the most important feature of school campuses for Years 1 – 6 and 7 – 8, followed by indoor spaces for use during break times and hall space.
  • Hall space was the third highest rated item for Years 9 – 13, after specialist science and technology facilities.
  • Respondents who indicated a preference for schooling with a particular character or focus most frequently selected schooling for students with special education needs (28.6%), and schooling for students who are gifted and talented (27.8%).

Primary provision

  • Average rankings showed that growing one or two of the schools and creating at least one new primary school was the option with the lowest level of opposition, with 79.3% of respondents selecting it as one of their top three options.

Secondary provision

  • 45.1% favoured growing Wakatipu High School on its new campus. This preference was particularly pronounced for students compared with parents or education related employees.
  • Students and respondents who selected growing Wakatipu High School as their preferred option had higher maximum size preferences than other groups.
  • The factors rated as being the most important in influencing preferred maximum size were access to a wider range of specialist staffing and access to a wider range of specialist resources.

Response differences for students compared to adults

  • When discussing education provision, students tended to emphasise their own preferences and feelings about school and learning more than adults.
  • Students favoured growing the existing primary schools (either all, or one or two) and secondary school compared with parents and education-related employees.
  • Student respondents had a higher maximum size preference for Wakatipu High School compared with parents and education-related employees.

Background to the Wakatipu Basin education provision consultation

The Wakatipu Area Strategy Plan (2009), outlined planned changed to the Wakatipu schooling network to accommodate population growth.  The relocation of Wakatipu High School to its new site at Remarkables Park in 2018, completes these planned changes. With the continued growth of the Wakatipu Basin population we need to develop a further plan to look at this area’s future education needs.
